The American Legion, founded in 1919, is a U.S. war veterans' organization devoted to
mutual helpfulness. It is the largest veterans service organization, and its mission
encompasses a wide range of activities aimed at supporting veterans and their families,
promoting patriotism, and serving communities.
The Cambridge American Legion Post was chartered on August 10, 1920,
and named in honor of Cambridge native, PVT Howard T. McCarty.
He was a member of the US Army and assigned to Company C, 306th Infantry Regiment,
77th infantry Division. Howard was killed in action in the Argonne Forest in
France on October 14, 1918.
